Hope of Family Expands its Interventions in Home Based Early Childhood Developments (ECDs)

  • March 05th, 2024

Last week, on February 28th, 2024, Hope of Family, in partnership with SHYOGWE Sector, announced the extension of their intervention in four home-based Early Childhood Developments (ECDs) located in Musezero, Kinyami, Kabungo, and Gatare.

The initiative aims to support the holistic development of 60 children in these ECDs by providing access to early learning, good nutrition, hygiene, and protection. Hope of Family will be providing essential support including the establishment of modern kitchen gardens at each ECD, as well as the provision of milk, porridge flour, and eggs.

Furthermore, caregivers from these ECDs will receive training on various topics related to parenting children under 5 years old. This includes guidance on preparing balanced diets using locally available foods, in an effort to combat malnutrition among young children.

During the launch event, Health Social Worker Francine MUKAYIRANGA led a training session for parents on the importance of balanced nutrition for children under 5 years old. The training emphasized the need to utilize locally available resources to address malnutrition, which remains a significant issue in Rwanda.

Research conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2020 revealed that Rwanda reported a stunting rate of 33%. Specifically, in SHYOGWE Sector, 46% of children under 5 years old suffer from malnutrition, as identified by Hope of Family's research in 2024.

Augustin IYAMUREMYE, the Executive Director of Hope of Family, highlighted the importance of targeting home-based ECDs as a means of reaching children from low-income families who are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition. he emphasized the organization's commitment to addressing malnutrition at its roots"We have taken the initiative to strengthen home-based ECDs after conducting a thorough study in SHYOGWE Sector," said Augustin. "The significant number of children identified as being under malnutrition status underscores the urgent need for support. By addressing the health and nutritional needs of these children, we can positively impact their emotional, social, and physical development, setting a foundation for their future well-being." He added.

The expansion of Hope of Family's interventions in SHYOGWE Sector reflects a commitment to addressing the root causes of malnutrition and promoting the holistic development of young children in Rwanda.
